We are VERY happy to announce that Delaware’s Senator Kaufman is sponsoring a bill in the U.S. Senate to designate two additional areas within the White Clay Creek Watershed as part of our watershed-wide National Wild & Scenic River designation. You are encouraged to attend this Press Event (details noted above) publicly announcing the bill’s introduction into the U.S. Senate.

Approximately 7.4 miles in New Garden Twp (including Egypt Run and the East Branch of the White Clay from the border of New Garden and Franklin Townships down to the border of New Garden and London Britain Townships) were originally excluded from the White Clay Creek Watershed's 2000 National Wild and Scenic River designation.  In Delaware the 1.6 mile Lamborn Run (a tributary roughly paralleling Pleasant Hill Road and .6 miles of which is within White Clay Creek State Park) was also excluded. Both sections were omitted as they had been considered as possible water reservoir sites. Last July, the Delaware River Basin Commission removed Lamborn Run from their list of potential water supply sources for New Castle County, and New Garden Township Board of Supervisors followed suit in August and voted to seek Wild and Scenic River inclusion for their segment.

The original exclusion of these sections in our Wild and Scenic designation made protection of the watershed’s scenic, recreational, and natural resources potentially more problematic. The Watershed Management Committee is delighted to have these two sections now considered for designation. The designation process for these 2 sections will require the same federal legislative process as the original designation bill.  There will be a U. S. Congressional hearing later, followed by a vote in the House and the Senate.

We seek your support in this process.  Your attendance at this kick-off event would signal the importance you assign to the designation of these sections. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

As the process moves along there will also be opportunity for support emails, faxes, or phone calls to your national Senators and Representative. Look for more information on contacting your congressmen in the coming weeks.
