Reforesting the White Clay Watershed: Volunteer Opportunities

Background

The White Clay Creek Watershed is unique in that it was the first watershed to receive National Wild and Scenic River status for an entire watershed.  This laudatory status was the result of the actions of committed volunteers who worked tirelessly to obtain this status for their beloved watershed.  Now you can further protect the White Clay by volunteering your time to help with reforestation efforts.

Reforestation

Increasing forest cover within the watershed is an important goal because trees provide the foundation for watershed health.  Protecting existing forests and planting trees are key whether your concerns are related to water or air quality, preservation of wildlife, or climate change.

The White Clay Creek watershed has a reforestation plan that outlines goals, objectives, and priorities. To view the plan, click here.

Planting trees will help to provide: Life sustaining oxygen, clean air, a plentiful supply of safe drinking water, healthy streams and soil, cool refreshing shade, scenic beauty, a stable climate, and food and shelter for all forms of life.

A Call to Action

Sometimes when problems seem insurmountable, it is time to simply act.  At the confluence of the preservation of clean air and water, climate change, and species extinction we find a prescription for planting trees.  It is something tangible, each of us can do- in our own watershed, our own communities, and our own backyards!

How You Can Help

Please reach out and volunteer to green the White Clay Creek Watershed. Consider the voluteer tasks below and contact Jessie Benjamin by phone:(484)887-8612 or email: jessie@taprootnativedesign.com if you are interested in helping with any of them.

  • Identify a location for your own community's reforestation project. Help organize a community group that with support can create a reforestation plan, plant treese, and manage plantings over time to ensure the success of the project.  When complete, signage can be located to indicate the name of the group that adopted the reforestation project
  • Identify a location (willing landowner) that would like to reforest a portion of their property. Let us know and we will see if we can provide support to make the project a reality
  • Volunteer to plant trees for a project that has been designated and planned by the White clay Wild & Scenic Committee. Training will be provided. An upcoming project is planned in Franklin Township for Spring of 2010
  • Volunteer to manage reforestation projects that have already been planted in the watershed.  Tasks will include weeding, tree shelter maintenance and invasive species removal.  Training will be provided.
  • If you are experienced in tree planting and management, volunteer to train others to plant or manage projects.
